    PPK eagle grips and RZM

Are there examples of eagle grips being on RZM PPKs or did RZM PPKs only have the plain walther grips?

They came with plain grips but could later be outfitted with PL Leader grips if purchased by the PL.

There is no evidence the PL grips were available for private purchase by a PL. No advertisements from Walther or from retailers selling PL holsters. The grips were designed and produced by Walther for sale on newly purchased PPKs.

Not sure where this fits in the overall scheme, but the PPK with the eagle grips my uncle brought home is not an RZM gun although it came with a PL holster.

            Larry,

A PPK with eagle grips and a P/L holster!

You were for sure kissed by an angel.

Some collectors are of the opinion that the PL/eagle grips would have been available for purchase and installation on PPKs with RZM markings that were supplied to PLs a few years earlier with standard grips. There has been no substantiation of this theory in the form of catalogs or sales brochures from Walther or other retailers.

As I wrote earlier, "There is no evidence the PL grips were available for private purchase by a PL. No advertisements from Walther or from retailers selling PL holsters. The grips were designed and produced by Walther for sale on newly purchased PPKs."

It is up to you to decide.

Dieter Marschall has a photo of one in his book on Walther pistols. How it came to be that way?

Erich, Dieter wrote his book on Walther pistols in 1997 and published the English language version in 2000. Some years later, I presented evidence to him of the date the PL eagles were created and he has since acknowledged that the RZMs could not have been issued with those grips. And he has expressed on other forums a belief similar to mine that there is no evidence that the grips were commercially available apart from being provided on new PPKs purchased by PLs, while other accessories for the PLs like PL holsters were available on the after-market.

Joe, I'm not saying the RZM in Dieter's book came with the grips but rather they were added at a later date. Possibly by the PL or post war?

We believe that post-war is the only option. In the III Period, there were no grips available with other PL items like holsters for purchase by PLs who already had an earlier issue pistol. If someone could find an advertisement, that would certainly change my mind. But from the evidence I have, PL grips were only provided with newly purchased PPKs to PLs.

In the past it was very common to trade the PL grips off lesser condition pistols onto higher condition pistols. Today who knows which pistols still wear their original grips. I don't collect Walthers, but have an RZM bought from the nephew of the veteran that brought it back. It is an 821000 range pistol which does not have PL grips.

My PL with party grips and holster is here:

                              http://208.11.143.133/detail.asp?id=...ps-and-Holster

It is in the 1 million series, which Rankin and Jan Still says is acceptible for PL grip guns.
