    MP40,how many mags per soldier.

Hi,I received in the post today from a forum member three lovely mint MP40 mags to go with the three I already have, thinking that I only needed a total of six for the pouches. Would the soldier have been issued just the six for the pouches or seven including one in the actual weopen. Thanks David.

Logic makes me think that the weapon was delivered with 6 mags, but soldier would get a 7th to complete.

Perhaps some fellow collector could post a pic of one of those scarce MP40 transport boxes....

These were issued with two pouches that held a total of six magazines, the gun came with one, and a loading tool. So seven mags is the total count.

Are you sure they were not delivered only with the two pouches holding the 6 mags and the loading tool? Transport in crates would not be with a mag on, so they would have big amount of loose mags to complete the guns.

Okay let me rephrase this, at the issue level for the division, corps or what have you the mags, pouches and tool were issued with the weapon. I am not sure how it was shipped from the factory to the depot.

            Hi,

As weapons are usually stored in the armory without a magazine, I would go with 6 in the pouches.

I guess you would have to be technical with the question. in the field would be 7 mags. but , from the "factory " is only 6. the rare transit case mentioned by Carles , only has space for 6. ,plus all the other basic accessories. extra crates of the mags were also send forward to the "in combat" troops for issue , & that was where the 7th mag was handed out. actually saw a guy with a full shipping crate of these mags. to stupid to bother getting a photo of it. looks like a wooden suit case , with a handle & 2 locks. AND marked with the contents on the out side ; like any other transit case
in the near future (I hope), I will be making repros of the 38/ 40 transit case. just hunting down the proper hardware. THESE WILL BE MARKED AS REPROS ON THE "BOX".

                6 mags.

Hi thanks for your opinions,I will stick with the six mags that I now have and when I'm in the field I'll buy a seventh! That field will prabably be at Beltring. Regards David.

I am contemplating the construction of such a chest myself...it doesn't look too hard to build. Let me know if you build one and I may buy it from you.

I would say 6 (2 pouches), i´ve seen enough pictures with soldiers on it walking with pouches and no mag. in the MP40 itself.
I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.

I've seen it both ways...If I was a soldier equipped with this weapon I would want more than even seven...I'd want at least a dozen.

They would have been issued through the supply system separately, as a weapon, and then the accessories. The same way a soldier today is issued a weapon from the arms room, his ammo pouches and mags from the supply sergeant. It would have depended a lot on the unit and it's supply chain/system.
