P38 puzzle

Hello Gentlemen,

I'm posting a pic of a P38 for a friend of mine. He is a bit confused as seems the item has things of the 480, AC and AC40. I don't really know what he means, as pistols is not my area, but I imagine some of you do. Can you help to clarify? Thanks,

It seems that there are "ac 40" without the ac code. I think Orv Reichert mentioned that in the p38forum.

There´s a "ac 40" not far away from your pictured one and the ac is on the right position:

My ac 40 (added) sn 3467a has the ac code on the right early position.

May be the blank slide is subvariant between the ac 40 added and normal ac 40 variant...

Slide looks like the markings were almost completely removed from the left side front. The 4 is not the correct font, so I suspect the markings may have been altered. The frame looks original.

Plus the whole gun seems reblued IMO

Owner says the gun has not all been reblued, apparently only the front left part, where the 'P38 40' are, and all numbering is original. There is more to do with an 'optical effect' than a great rework. Seems previous owner had that part 'restored' possibly due to light rust caused by being in the leather pouch.
