I'm not understanding what the 'S' is telling us here...

Since the 'Roman' 'E' is for application; i.e., machine guns and rifles, then 'S' is an application? What IS the application?

Just found this here - looks like there's 50+ applications for Mauser 7.92!!! And this is a general purpose cartridge...
