Going Rate for a ARTILLERY Luger 1917 non-import

    Hello,

I recently picked this up. Nice 1917 Artillery luger. All matching but the magazine and the extractor.. Suppose that would be the first part that would break for a combat gun? The bore is in good/very good condition. Nice groves and bright.

The only real "negative" I can see about it is the small pitting on the side plate.

The rest of the bluing looks orgiinal with some very small rust specks here and there. Not a mint piece but an honest piece.

Not being a big gun guy I wanted to toss it up here for discussion.

    Thanks for any info

The "30" extractor is the only non-matching piece... the rest are 97

The neat part is the 30 has the imperial stamp on it which tells me that it was replaced then or at least with a proper aged part?

Maybe it is just my eyes, but the non-matching extractor (numbered "30") appears to be Weimar-era production by Simson of Suhl, Germany (based on the "Eagle over 6" proof mark found on it).

could be...I dont know all the marks that well. It looks like an Imperial era type eagle to me?

I agree with Alan that the eagle appears to be the Weimar era eagle, and probably Simson.

Ok.. it was replaced in the 20's?

How does that help or hurt this piece?

                    thanks J

It could have been replaced during the 1920's or it could have been replaced by a previous owner just a few years ago. In the end it really doesn't matter one way or the other except for the fact that the extractor is mis-matched to the pistol.
Simpson Ltd. typically has pretty nice matching 1917 date LP.08's priced around the $3000 range. Someone here put fourth the formula for pricing Simpson's Lugers as taking 50% of his advertised price for a realistic value.

Yes, I too enjoy looking at the listings at SIMPSON... Never bought anything but great pics.

From other listings that have sold I figured around 1900-2100

Is that a realisitc window from a private seller?

                        thanks J

                          Probably a very close estimate.

                            Yep

They ain't making any more of these.

Biggest problem with Lugers is the average price has climbed above the average pocketbook.

Second is shooting them. I have owned a great many over the years and even fired 1900s.

I blew up a nice P38 sometime ago and rarely fire any of my related pieces these days.

I concur. Simpson Ltd is for those folks whose pockets go deep and don't care about overpaying for an item.....for a real laugh, go look at their German militaria section and their prices for that.
