I know the law says that I can be 18 to privately purchase an NFA item in my own state, but Im probably better off waiting (am broke right now, and my chances of finding a registered MG through a private seller are slim to nill).Comment

For $2.5K for a gun and a $800 upper you will have a fine SMG that is fairly cheap to feed being 9mm. Then you can save for more expensive things... I have a MG08/15 coming. Suppressors are fun on MGs too! Oh and wait to you are Married and have kids and a house... you think you don't have money now!
This is a very nice group of firearms. Should bring good money. I sure like those MP44s. I would like add one to the collection eventually!Comment

. One of my favorite SMGs!!!! I like the MP34o the best, but the EMP is definately second. Great gun!

My first SMG was a FXO 41 mp40(C&R all match) with flat magazine housing , bought in 1996 for $3200! just before all hell broke loose on MG prices , a all match C&R original finish MP40 goes above $10,000 this day and people are not even selling their good stuffs! , STEN tube gun and MK760 are good choice also if you want to go cheap(around 3 to 4 thousand).

Ill probably be stuck with a MAC10 for my first MG, but then again, an MG is an MG. How many guys at the range shoot MGs (Ill probably be the only one)?

Just my thoughts, but the "thrill" of firing full auto does not last all that long; shoot it a few times and you will quickly get tired of paying for the tremendous volume of ammunition it consumes and you will also become tired of the hours spent cleaning it after each shoot (and the risk of putting wear/tear on it, particularly if it is a vintage firearm). To me, if you are a serious collector/historian of vintage military arms, the only way to go is to save up and wait until you can get a real C&R machinegun: you will get much more enjoyment out of owning and preserving a C&R gun in your collection than you will get from taking a MAC 10 or tube Sten out to the range and impressing the locals with a quick thrill.
Again, these are just my thoughts and others likely feel very differently. The point is you need to decide if you will be happy with a gun that has absolutely no history behind it and you just want the thrill of "blasting away", or if your true desire is to have a real piece of history in your collection.
BTW: I am seriously impressed with the C&R guns in this thread and look forward to hearing lots more details about each of them. Just for starters, Ed, what is the maker's code and date on the '34 and '42? Is the '34 all (or mostly) matching numbers? On the '42 it looks like the receiver has a clear phosphate finish (i.e. no dye in the phosphate solution), but the top cover is blued (so I bet it is from a contractor different than the receiver). Any such details/descriptions you have would be appreciated.Comment

Yes thats the constant problem of savings! I am 28 and have 2 MGs but I have fired a lot. The MP40 is ok but you are paying a lot for the history. A Uzi is another good way to look! $2-3K cheaper. Remeber, you must decide if you want a shooter or a piece of history! I would not suggest the Jap gun. All ammo must be reloaded, spare parts are hard to find and expensive.Originally posted by Josh Beckett View Post
Getting stuck with a Mac is not a bad thing anymore. Seriously, I have a M11. In the stock config, its a little bullet hose. With the addition of a Max11 upper (Check Max11.com) you have a fine little sub gun that you can put modern optics on!
I am sure there are more guys then you guess with MGs. The key is finding them. We went from two of us with one MG to 10 shooters or more every week in about two years! Thats really the key with shooting FA... as you can use other guns. Its not like you can afford 20-30 MGs...
I have seen tube MP40s in the high $7k range and C&R in the $9k range lately. Good stuff is coming up as old guys die and people are hurting from the economy! Look at M2Hbs... they were at $25K and now are under $15K for a sideplate gun.Originally posted by frundsberg View Post

There are two schools in MGs. The Historical based collector and the Shooter collector. You obvious fall into this histocial based collector, which there is nothing wrong with. I think the key is looking at yourself and see what you want out of a MG. Then try and get to shoot the gun before you buy it. For example, I really don't like the M1 carbine... I just don't sorry. I mean its not a bad gun, just not for me. However the M2 carbine is a different story. In FA its actually a cool little gun. I would consider picking one up at the right price. Then lets look at the AK... a gun I love in semi. I got to shoot a Poly converted AK47 and I did not like it at all! The trigger slap was so bad I could hardly feel my finger after two mags. So now I need to shoot a C&R gun because I know I will not likely every buy a converted AK.
Tell us, what other guns are in your collection or what other guns do you like shooting? Do you buy ammo by the box or 1000 rounds at a time? That will tell us where to point you! Oh and you need to make it to a FA shoot or find a place to rent one. FA is not for everyone just like I am no sniper. No sense in dumping lots of money into a gun thats not for youComment
