    1938 Dated bullets

Found these today. Can you guys tell me what rifle they were used with and the caliber?

They are 8mm. They are used with the M95/30 Steyr Mannlicher carbine. I think the exact size is 8x56, and the 8mm ammo used in the mauser is an 8x57mm. Going off a foggy memory right now.

I picked up a box of these about 7 years ago. We had a german exchange student living with us. I showed her the box and she read it for me. It says 10 pieces(stuck) with a sharp (sharfe) tip.

There has been much confusion over these rounds. Many think they are for the 98 Mauser, which they are not as already stated. As a matter of semantics, the bullets are the projectiles that are fired. These are cartridges or rounds, Patronen, is the German term.

10-15 years ago you could get these for $2-$3 a box in the clip, someone uncovered what must have been a million of them. It seemed like every one of them I saw was dated 1938. I would guess that after Germany annexed Austrian, they must have ran off a large batch of these cartridges for their Steyr rifles & carbines then never used them. They are a rimmed cartridge so they couldn't be made to fire in a Kar98k.

When did the Wehrmacht march into Austria? It was in March 1938, so it is not surprising that some ammo made that year has no WaA.

Well, as the first box is dated August 1938, and has no WaA, and the second is dated September 1938, and does have a WaA, it is clear that the NAZIfying process took place between those two months (when talking about ammo in Austria). Another date for history.

Sorry, I have just realised that the second cartridge you show is also stamped August 1938 and has a WaA!! so the chage took place along that same month!!

                    hi carles ,
the box was sealed when i got it (sorry for opening it ,to my defence ,i was only 12 years old back then...)
so there where august-bullets in a september-box ! i guess that the cardboard factory worked a bid faster...
the nazi-stamps must come in the seccond half of august .
                    best regards ,jo.
