    Early? K98 stock marking question

    Hello,
I just got this k98 stock. I can't find any eagle markings and I can't decide whether they might have been removed and what the age is of the stock.

At the front there is a strange, possibly very early marking. Below the buttstock it's marked 5 . 29 . 41 B

    Does anyone reconise the markings?

    Thanks,
    Frank

I have never seen a stock dated under the buttplate. Usually the serial numbers were stamped into about the area on the inside below where the rear sight would be.
I do not recognize the stamp by the bayonet lug but maybe the picture isn't clear enough. Are you sure it is a German issued Kar98k?

I see many K98 stocks that are dated underneath the butt-plate. Usually with Mauser-Oberndorf or Mauser-Borsigwalde produced rifles.

Would 5-29-41 be the proper method of dating for a German weapon? Most items that are dated, such as a soldbuch it should read 29-5-41?
Col Klink, how were all of those dated that you have seen?

Yes. IMO this condition is not uncommon and represents the production date of the stock component itself rather than the assembly date of the weapon. The subject stock in this thread has what appears to be an Imperial bayo lug. Curious to see/hear other details of this stock.

yes just looked at my ar41 obendorf butt wood is clearly stamped 2 12 41 should have stock number (same as gun ) stamped on bottom of gun stock.look careful 8 inches behind trigger area on bottom of stock. waffens are on right side of stock . under disk, a waffen, then a m or h and another waffen under that then a waffen at 90 degrees to that lower then another waffen under that. look in the channel under the barrel there should be stock number there also and a backwards 6
