MG34 buttstock variants

Gentlemen,

As MG34 is one of my study areas, I keep on looking for maker's variants. In this case buttstock makings. The usual thing is to find early and late war wooden, and bakelite with/without metal tips. They all have the same basic shape but I have spotted a small number of a wooden variant (pics). Are these post war production for israeli contract?

I know this type of shape from some MG34 which came from Finland. So in my opinion these are postwar butts from Finland.

as far I know on this subject there is 4 differents kind of MG34 buttstocks
1- the early in walnutt until 1936 to 1938
2- the early bakelit with metal tips from 1938 to 1941
3-the bakelit from 1939 to 1942
4-the last one is in beech ( late German and "dot" production) from 1942 to 1945 Israeli "dot 1945" contract was whit beech butt until 1948...

Hello Carles,

the buttstocks (the wood) were not marked. I cannot remember if the MGs were marked with SA, but the dealer who imported them bought a lot stuff in Finland and nearly all guns were marked with SA. I bought some MG34 parts from this dealer, it was the hole gun without the receiver. No one of the parts was marked with SA, but normally the SA mark was attached to the receiver...

I've never seen or heard of a the metal stock for the MG-34, but what you show is most interesting. In fact, what you show reminds me of the "smooth" type stamped steel stocks found on the very early FG-42 rifles. Given that a similar type stamped steel stock was used on the early FG's, it seems possible that a similar stock was tried on the MG-34. Looks like a subject worthy of more research.

I was in Prague Museum some years ago, and I don't recall having seen that one!! I imagine it is post war made. It looks really nice

The one I posted was found among a lot of Spanish contract MG34s. I thought it was a waffenmeister made so I let it pass. Perhaps it could be an experimetal steel butt stock? I might try to get it back...

Most of Spanish contrac MG34s were produced in 1943 and had the plain bakelite butt stock, so I was surprised to find a steel made one.

It is true!! I recall having seen a short butt stock for bunker positions. Perhaps it's in Folke's book. Yep, page 273, pic number 322, from an old manual? Does anybody have a clear photo of one. I believe there was a thread about a collector in Belgium? that was building some bunker replicas.

A knowlegable member has told me that these rare butt stocks, that started the thread, are post war Norwegian replacements, so mistery solved!
