Good dealer for a shooter Luger ??

Not looking for a collectible or wall hanger

Any direction for dealers who handle shooter quality Lugers ?

The sea of web dealers seem to dwell on collectible examples in the thousands only.

Direction appreciated, have not found a 1970s made model which would serve the purpose and less chance of not being able to be fired.

Only "shooter" at last show the dealer said "no guarantee what happens if you fire it." Hardly enthused me to buy, blowing up in my hand not a trait sought.

    Mark:
I recommend looking at gun shows. I usually see several Lugers at the shows here in "shooter condition"(mismatched parts, chrome plated etc). and the owners are usually willing to deal on these. You'll also see them on Gunbroker and other auction sites.

Normally if you find one shooter grade Luger on a table at a gunshow, it will usually be very over priced. Someone not familiar with Luger values tends to over price what they think is a really valuable pistol. Don't give up on the larger dealers as occasionally they take in shooter grades when they buy several pistols, and will be happy to move them on.

          Hi Mark,

Most firearm auction companies have at least a few Lugers at every auction. The highest end guns with 9X% blue, no pitting, excellent bores, etc., will be the rarer bird (although not rare at all). So you will almost always have a shooter grade Luger to bid on. Will save you some dough over a gun show, I would wager.

          Happy Hunting!

            Mark,

A good place to find a shooter Luger for a reasonable price (and safe to shoot) are, in my opinion, the Luger oriented discusion boards like http://luger.gunboards.com/index.php or http://www.lugerforum.com/ .

On their trading sections there is always one or two offers of shooters for below $1000. Good luck with your search.

I'm a member of both forums and have had great luck with shooters & hard to find accessories from the other members!!

Agree with Doug that you should definitely be spending under $1,000, and would say you could probably get away with even a few hundred bucks for a mechanically fine Luger with a good bore, but with significant loss of blue. Just depends on condition at that point, and how much you want to pay.

Ditto on the below. The lugerforum is a good place to look. Also check the p38 forum as well as checkpointcharlies for some good ones. Gunbroker can be a bit of a wild card at times, unfortunately...
