Curious MG34/42 remade ammo drum

Last one this year: I have seen this: Opinions....

It looks like a German ammo drum remade to a lantern or some kind of thing. Of course sold at Evil-bay as 'ultra rare' version for the Afrika Korps, with 'cooling system ventilation holes'

should have asked the seller if anything is missing? what stopped the sand getting through the 'vents'

While the seller's claims are a little flimsy, i find this drum quite interesting; i wonder if it is a wartime convertion.

I like the lamp theory,I would guess a post war conversion to use up surplus stocks,.Things were very tough at this time and anything and everything that could be put to any domestic use was used.

A strange piece for sure. The holes in the front end of the drum would make it useless as a mag. drum, the tips of the rounds could become stuck in them causing a jam or mis-feed. Lantern sounds good to me. What did it sell for?
