BYF 43 Mauser 98 Stock Marking

    BYF 43 Mauser 98 Stock Marking

    Hi,

    I picked up an all matching, original finish, non-import marked, non Russian capture, BYF-43 Mauser at the local gun show last weekend. The serial number (k block) is on the bottom of the stock, in the stock channel, and the hand guard as well. It also has the letters NH over M on the stock. Any ideas of what those letters indicate?

    Interesting... I've never seen anything like that before, but I'd guess it was done post-war for sure.

        N H M its and old marking, usually with two fours, reading N4H4M.....


        stands for not 4 him 4 me... So i'll just PM you my address then you can ship it to me and then we'll have this little mixup all sorted out.

        IF its not import marked, then I would guess that those are the vet's initials who brought her back. Is it a duffle cut? Import marked?

        can we see the rest of it please?

          I took these photos very quickly under kitchen table lighting this morning as my better half was giving me the evil eye for desecrating Christmas by taking pictures of rifles. (Maybe she was worried I might shoot my eye out. )

          I will try and get some better indirect outdoor lighting when time permits later. The rifle is not import marked, and no duffel bag cut. The barrel contract number is 43D717. The finish is actually better than my poor photos indicate. It came with a sling that is in fair shape with what looks like I can read at least 3 (444's) on it.

                  Thats a beauty! looks like the floorplate screws have never been turned.... I love these mid to late Mauser Oberndorf's (BYF's). sure is pretty. I even like the serial#.
                  One question... Why in the H*LL did you remove the front sight hood?

                    I took it off to completely remove the bands for cleaning and inspections. They went right back on using some needle nose pliers and a son holding the rifle in about 5 seconds !

                      Ah I see.... well be careful about scratching her up.... that rifle is in great condition with lots of original finish left!
