    Rifle info.

    Hello all.........

I was wondering if someone could tell me something about a rifle I missed purchasing at an auction lately. The rifle was a bolt action, and had the following markings: on top of the bolt chamber was the name "Augsburg or Augsberg" and the date of 1913. On the left side of the bolt chamber was the marking of "Gew 98 or Gem 98" in some kind of script. That is the only code/markings I could find that were legible. The rifle itself was in fair but complete condition but obviously was kept in an outside shed. If anyone could tell me about what I missed, I would greatly appreciate it; sorry for the lack of more info. of pictures.

Sounds like a G98, standard German WW1 rifle, possibly Amberg arsenal, Bavaria.1903-07. See Walter, SMALL ARMS OF THE WORLD. Possibly scrubbed for use by some other government after WWI. Poles also built some rifles on reparations G98 actions.

I agree, sounds like a Gewehr98, -Amberg produced the Gewehr98 from 1903-1908, took a breather & started again in 1911-1918... unfortunately although production is recorded for 1911-1913 we have no confirmed examples or serial ranges to make estimates of production for those years, so its unfortunate that you couldn't find one with the serial number intact.

      My website covers the basics:
