    Mauser 71 ( 1871 ) Regiment Markings

I love all things Mauser and recently purchased this Model 71 ( 1871 ). I would like to know more about the markings in particular the regimental markings. Next I will need to find a nice matching bayonet and 11mm dies/kit for reloading. Thank you all in advance.

Good looking rifle you have there

The marking is for the Ersatz (Replacement) Battalion of the 17th Bavarian Infantry Regiment. Company 3. Weapon 2.

The rest of the stamps (Crown/letter) are military inspection stamps.

Amberg where the rifle was made was the main Bavarian arsenal.

The large crowned L stamping is for King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

    Hope that helps a little.

    Regards

    Richie

Excellent rifle, I'd like to get one myself one of these days.

The Königlich Bayerisches Infanterie-Regiment "Orff" Nr. 17 was formed on 24 July 1878, when the 6th, 8th, and 10th Bavarian Jäger Battalions (the 6th and 8th Jäger Bttlns. participated in the Austro-Prussian War; all three participated in the Franco-Prussian War, fighting at Wissembourg, Wörth, Chatillon, Sedan, and the Siege of Paris) were consolidated into one unit. It was stationed in Germerscheim in the Bavarian Palatinate (Pfalz.)
