    dot 1944

    Hello,

I would like to show you my latest aquisition.
It's a mauser dot 1944. It was recently found in the hayloft of a farmhouse in the north of Belgium. I didn't found it myself but got it from the person who found it. I have no reason not to believe him, since "he has no dog in this game".
Your opinions on this rifle are welcome and appreciated. I have no expert knowledge about k98's and so the pictures should show you a rifle that was untouched for 66 years. If anything is wrong with it's configuration, it might prove the story wrong, but I would be happy to know so. (and be dissapointed though, ).
I won't sell the rifle, but I'd like to know it's (market) value. An estimate would be nice.

    So here is the rifle:

it's overall condition is not very good (alot of pitting, though I think it has nice patina). First thing to notice is that it is missing the safety lever. Barrel and receiver are blued and both show a waffenampt 63 stamp. (2 on the receiver and 1 on the barrel.). The barrel has also got 2 letters stamped on the side, next to the Wa63: KF. Where does KF stand for?
The serial number is hard to make out due to the pitting, but it should be something like: 1 ? ? 0 0 a. (barrel has no serial number)
The bolt is not blued but parkerized or phosphated and it's serial is 5166a.
(so bolt seems mismatched. I'd love to believe the last 2 numbers of the sn on the receiver are 6 6, though they do seem to round for that.)

I only found 1 marking on the stock: a "3" on the main stock, below the front guard. Clearly can be seen that the front stock guards are held by screw rather than a spring. the bayonet mount is also missing.
So is this stock a so called "kriegsmodell"?
    The floorplate shows no markings.

I think I said enough, I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking,

    cheers, Jakke

Im no expert by any means, but I think the gun looks incorrect (it doesnt have the bayonet lug, which I was told that it should be missing on really late guns), If I read the serial number right, its in the A block, and my great grandpa brought back a AS block rifle that wasnt even that late. Dont take my word for it though, I am not an expert.

That is the correct serial number range for a Kriegsmodell dot44, and the bolt could be phosphate. Take a photo of the bolt- it's obviously been with it a long time so is technically correct. Sometimes factory error cause mistakes on serial numbering bolts.

What range did the Kreigsmodels begin for DOT1944? I have one thats an AS block that has the later style front band, but it still has the bayonet mount.

              thank you for your replies.
I don't know what caused the stains on the stock, though I don't think it's from water damage.

Here is picture of the bolt. The colour difference is greater when seen in person.

              Thanks, best regards,

              Jakke

                Josh,

The serial number style for dot44 is very confusing. First were XXXX w-z blocks, finishing out the serial numbers started in 43. Then, double letter suffix XXXXaa-XXXXax (seems to be no ay or az). Then, abrupt change to 5 digit serial sequence 1-99,000, and finally 1-45000a , at which point swp45 code came into use.

The Kreigsmodells start showing up near the 50,000 serial number from my experience, but are intermittent through the 5 digit block.

Thanks. I am by no means a 98k expert.

If someone on here says the rifle is okay, its okay.

Cool find! I wonder how many other attic and barn "treasures" have yet to be discovered!
