    German Luger and P38

Hello, I have a gentleman that wants to sell me a couple of pistols. I do not know much (or anything) about firearms. They look good to me but would like to know what the experts think. Do they look authentic and what would be a fair price to offer him for them. Thanks in advance for your help.

Below is a link to some photos of them.

Taking flash photos on a reflective surface is just about guaranteed to give bad results. The flash bounces off the reflective surface, which underexposes the picture. If you don't have a tripod, take the pictures outdoors in bright shade.
From what can be seen of the Luger, it is refinished. P.38 appears to be original.

Thanks, I have posted more on the flickr link taken in sunlight. I would like to know what they are worth today as this gentleman is trying to sell them to me and I really don't collect them.

        I appreciate the help. Henry

Is the P38 all matching? Have you looked to see if the mag matches, which can still be the case in the ac42's, depending on letter block, i.e. a or b block?
Lot of questions here in order to give you a ballpark answer.
See if you can get him to commit to a price first. See what he is looking for. He may be skyhigh!!

I have better photos and they seem to be matching. He is asking $500 for it. I don't know if that is a good or bad price.

$500 for the P38 is a good price. Even if it is not matching you are only over paying about $100. AC42 in good condition would sell for about $750 in my area. Matching mag is a plus.

I agree that $500 is a good price for an AC42 that is matching, but why overspend by $100 for a non-matching one. Let's try and save money for our members. That's what we're here for...to save someone being burned for no good reason!!!

When you purchase a new gun, always keep it in the back of your mind how much trouble it would be to sell if you needed to sell it quickly. Any mismatched gun is going to be harder to sell, and on a $500 gun instead of getting $100 more than it's worth you will be lucky to get $100 less than it is worth.

Hot damn !! if the numbers on the bbl and locking block match, you will hit a Home Run !!! VERY uncommon to find ac 42 with matching mag... In any kind of shape. And looks like that one will clean up fairly well. If you can buy it for 5, do it. For 6, do it. A bargain that you can easily double your money on it in an instant.
In the photos you can just see the proofs on the hammer, trigger and slide release.. That's what they should look like... They should have some of those on early ac 42's.

IMO: The P.38 looks like a nice honest gun and a very good buy at $500.
