Hello There, I just got out of a local gun shop today. I looked at some Lugers and P-38s in a large glass display case. The gun shop have a large inventory of Lugers and P-38s. I asked its owner to open the glass display case for me to inspect them. He allowed me to inspect Lugers and P-38s. Most of Lugers and P-38s do have matching serial numbers on seperate gun parts. I asked him how much is a Luger and he said $3500. Then I asked him for price on matched P-38 pistol. He told me $2500. I was hit with price shocker. Then I thanked him and left his gun shop. These prices was all WAAAAYY HIGH for me to buy for my collection. How much do Lugers and P-38s from WW2 era sell for? I always want to have both German pistols in my collection. If I may, I don't post here much but I have been collecting for twenty years. I purchased my first P-38 for $350.00, blood stained but all matching in 1990. The same gun now would cost me $650-750 or better. This past year I purchased a Luger with a signifigant variation (1 of 550 made) and paid just at $4,000.00. If you hunt the pawn shops/gun shops you should be able to find a nice P-38, all matching, for around $400-700. A run-of- the -mill P-08, $700-1200. I hope this helps you,.

Well, my first impression is that his prices are really way too high.
HOWEVER, it all depends on what he got there. Matching numbers is only one thing, among several other details, that have an impact on a price for a Luger or a P.38.
For instance, if you are looking for a legit Navy Luger, with original finish, USD 3,500 would be a very fair price. The same goes for a early Walther HP in great condition. I know you got the picture.
But, this situation would be an exception. The experience shows that usually you have a common guy trying to sell a "rare nazi Lugar" - and with some luck, it was even took from a dead SS officer lying over a Tiger tank.
My advice is to keep an eye on the e-stand or other Net forums, where you can buy very nice pistols for 40% of that prices.

I'm a novice P-08 & P-38 collector. I have recently picked up several rather common P-08's (the 1915 DWM military is posted below). They all are 100% matching except mags & excellant bores, +95% blue & straw with appropriate dated holster & they never cost over $1300 to $1400. Sometimes much less. For me anyway condition & matching #'s 100% are critical.

Gunshows are even better places to get reamed than pawn shops.
I suggest spending time at the Luger forum as well as P 38 forum.
Prices vary according to pistol variations as well as numbers and condition.
There are a couple P38s that bring high prices, but sounds like you just had a bad encounter.MLPComment

I agree that the asking prices at shows for decent P38s are still $600 on up. The problem is due to the recession it's a buyers market and I rarely see one sold for these prices.Originally posted by TP Alexander View Post
As a side Note: From what I see guns sales are way down at this time from the panic buying we were seeing at the end of last year into the first part of this year.
The Crossroads show is coming up this weekend here and I know several regular dealers who are skipping it since they didn't even recover their table expenses at the last show.
