What does the "X" mark signify?

The X mark is the Russian arsenal stamp.

The bore on the rifle is pretty decent, not dark, sharp rifling, but never can tell just how well it will shoot. The bolt headspaces good. Our weather has been in the steady 90'S, so waiting for it to cool off a bit, before a trip to the range
Thanks for all the information and links. Always wished a gun could tell it's story, guess this is about as close as it gets

Is that a very late war stock without the doughnut hole near where the sling goes through the stock?

Yes , it would be late war, with take down hole on butt plate. However, my freind said they were using white, instead of red glue for the laminations, this late in the war.
