How do you ship a gun?

    Hello all,

Any ideas on how I go about doing this? I take it I have to get a FOID card as well?

    Shipping gun

I've never heard of a FOID card???

That said, it's easy. If you are shipping to yourself from one location to another you can address the package to yourself and ship it, rifles and shotguns that is. USPS will only ship long guns. USPS will not take pistols. Pistols must be shipped UPS or FEDEX.

If you sold to someone else that weapon must be shipped to an FFL holder (Federal Firearms License). THere is a class of license known as a Curio and Relics license for older guns. Most WW2 and before guns are covered in this class.

You DO NOT have to be a license holder to ship, the person on the receiving in MUST BE. I always include a copy of the license in the package should it be opened by a postal inspector, etc. UPS and FEDEX will want to see a copy of that license at the counter.

If the person you sold to does not have a license, than they must locate a local FFL holder to receive that package for them, most dealers do that for 25$-50$ per weapon, some do it for more, some for less.

Of course always make sure the weapon is unloaded, on bolt guns I usually pull the bolt and wrap it in bubble wrap separately in the package. Hope that helps, Chris..

Of course, depending upon where you are shipping to the local municipality or state may have additional laws in addition to the federal laws. Google that particular state or municipality to check for further details. The typical culprits are the "anti-gun areas", California, DC, Chicago, NYC, etc.

You have to have a FOID in Illinois, go figure it would be Obamas state that would require a license.

So I am going to get a license in Wisconsin as I am now a resident here. I will not need a FOID card as I am not in IL anymore. So what do I need to do in WI to own a gun, simply have it shipped to a firearms dealer and pick it up with a valid license? Does it have to register, and if yes, then as what, a historical weapon?

Wisconsin is a bit more Liberal on gun laws than IL. You will need a WI issue drivers License or State ID showing residency, but you won't need a FOID card.

If you have a gun shipped to a FFL holder, they will have to fill out the paperwork, do the background check, 3 day waiting period etc. If you then sell then gun, while you can without filling out paperwork, but it is best to get the buyers info, as the paper trail would end with you.

If you go to a gun show and buy from someone who is not a dealer ( Private sale) it is cash & carry.

          Where in WI are you?

If you get to West Allis, stop by the shop sometime! We don't sell guns, but we have some airsoft schmiessers!

I am pretty sure UPS actually requires the bolt be pulled. I shipped a DaeWoo DR200 once and pulled the bolt. Every firearm shipped to me had the bolt removed. Then again my C93 came to me with the bolt in the rifle but had a safty orange thing shoved into the chamber.
