Case for LW Drilling M30 ce - Local Gunshow Find

Here is something I spotted at a local gunshow this morning. Unfortunately, the owner knows what he has and it is priced accordingly. In fact, to me - the asking price of $2,500 is too much for what you get.

Allegedly, the case recently came out of a WWII vet's estate in North Mississippi. The story is that the vet split up the gun and accessories many years ago, selling only the LW Drilling. The vet's grandson, when going through the estate, located only the carry case for the Drilling. The vet's grandson believes that the ammo and accesory items may still be mixed in with his grandfather's effects and, reportedly, is looking for these loose items.

Neat little item and I sure thought that was about to finally stumble upon a REALLY good deal at my local show, but this feeling of "discovery" quickly evaporated when the seller advised me of the price (I had visions of picking it up for maybe $200 or $300).

    Hope you enjoy the photos.

Strange. Makes you wonder why he would sell the gun but keep the case, or why someone would buy the gun but not the case. Definitely an unusual find, but valuable only to someone who has the gun and needs a case. It would make a good conversation piece, but not $2500 worth.

                        Johnny,

I think the responses (i.e. lack thereof) thus far to this posting are highly reflective of what you say: sure, this is a "rare" and "interesting" item, but the market for it is going to be VERY limited. Just for kicks, I'll monitor the status of the case from show-to-show and see if the price changes and/or whether it ever sells.

BTW: I wonder who the real collectors are for M30 LW drillings? The prices are in the $15K to $20K range if real nice and with case and all accessories. I don't know about you, but I've just never heard much discussion of these guns among the "regulars" who collect rank-and-file WWI & WWII German firearms. Sure - I've heard/seen these same collectors sink $15K to $20K into desirable Lugers, P.38's, G-41's, machineguns, etc. but just never heard/seen any of the same type guys express a longing to acquire one of the LW survival drillings. I wonder who these guns appeal to (at market prices)? I would really enjoy having one but would never pay market price for one (to much other fun stuff could be acquired with the same funds).

                          Drilling Case

You're right about a narrow market for an item like this, however who knows? The right guy with the right drilling and no case might be all over this....I know if I had a drilling w/o the case I'd be interested.. CHris...

I would think a Luftwaffe Drilling would be a crossover collectable that extends from those who collect Luftwaffe Flight gear to those that collect German wartime firearms to those that collect Drillings in general

Actually, I think the price might be right, just the wrong venue. Somewhere out there is someone with a Drilling that is in need of the proper case, and this one might be the only chance he gets to complete (or nearly complete) the issue set. Given the level of collector we're talking about here, I would imagine somone would be more than happy to drop $2000, and would likely increase the value of his gun accordingly.

The seller's problem is that he's trying to find that specific Drilling owner at a gunshow, where people are more likely looking for modern handguns and rifles. If he'd hand it over to a proper vintage firearms auction, he'd narrow his audience to a more likely set of collectors.
