    Holster question - period picture

    Dears,

    Looking at this studio portrait i wondered about the holster he's wearing.
    At first, it looks like a P.08 holster but when you look at the upper left area of the holster and the flap as a whole, it seems to be something different.


    Any opinions ?

    Hi Kris,

    It looks like it might be a P.08 holster that has had the flap replaced. Notice the buckle hole that is too far up to ever possibly be usable.

    Just my best guess.

      If it weren't for the buckle and closure system the flap would remind me those of the navy luger holsters, very unlikely here without being able to see the complete holster...who knows?

          hi guys ,a few years ago i heard abouth the fact that most professional photographers used there own equipment tho "enhance" there pictures a bit !
          they had diffirent caps ,vissors ,belts with buckles ,holsters ,... wich the soldiers could use for the picture to make it more atractive . maybe this holster is such an item and was alterned during the shoots...
          well ,this is just an opinion from me ,

            The suggestion that it is a studio prop is quite logical and compelling. Walking out, this (Gefreiter?) would have his bayonet and troddle, but would he have his P08? It is definitely NOT a Cz24 holster!

              Thanks for the suggestions friends, it's always nice to discuss

              I have no problem with the fact that photographers had items at their disposal to enhance photo's BUT.... this photo was taken in - probably 1940 - Belgium, far from Germany. The photo is scanned directly from the original cliché (negative). There are no traces of a manual retouche on the cliché. I can not imagine this Belgian photgrapher had holsters etc at his disposal.

              I received a whole bunch of negatives from the son (himself a photgrapher). He was cleaning some old archives from his late father and found a bunch of ww2 negatives (also glass negatives). After september '44 no more Germans soldiers and Belgian volunteers were photographed but the English soldiers. Bussiness went on, only the uniforms changed

                It certainly appears to be a P08 holster but there are some interesting inconsistencies with the closure strap, as noted above the hole far above the normal or logical location, also the closure strap is secured to the lid with a block pattern stitch which is almost never found on German military issue holsters. This last and the oddly located hole lead me to believe that the strap, and perhaps the entire lid, have been replaced. It may be a repaired Imperial era holster.

                      I think is a ribbon bar for the
                      The March 13, 1938 Commemorative Medal
                      (Die Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 13. Marz 1938) with the device looking like the medal.

                      I posted it in the medals section but no answers.
                      To correct my post on the repaired P.08 holster, i think it contained another pistol than a P.08.
