You should search the Forum archives; several years ago some guy in Eastern Europe posted a ground-dug example of the MP-40 w/ longer barrel. Also, I think there were a few period photos offered in the same thread, showing the WWII German use of what was, apparently, an experimental "longer" barrel on the MP-40.

Might be to maximize the distance the pistole round can go , as most barells were made for a specific purpose like the round the corner version for tanks, and house fighting, as we still use em today, except the gun folds , and is made in israel to also see around corners prior to exposing the torso .
It looks longer to me also, and heavier sorta like a bull barrel , possibly to also resist burning up quicker. It would make a good head banger for close in fighting, in case you didnt have you shovel with you .Its anybodys guess, but im sure somewhere in a german options manual it is listed or some purpose that's specific.

After I compared my MP40 barrel and the one in the picture(rotated the picture and zoom in) ,that's a longer barrel version without doubt ! I'm been collecting MP40 for several decades and never seen one before , also the cocking handle is the early one piece style and you can see the leather strap ring right before the barrel nut ,and that strap is to secure the one piece cocking handle bolt , too bad there are not one close up photo for that long barrel MP40 exist yet !
