What colour were K98 stock stained

    Hello
I was reading a copy of backbone of he wehrmacht, and I see some of the rifle stocks were stained. Does anyone know what colour was used to stain the stocks.
Or was there a variety of different stains used on different types of wood.
    Kind Regards

Probably one of those things you would have to experiment with to get the right color. I stained a G43 stock that had been stripped and TruOiled, and just tried different stains until I got the right color.
The Model 1903 Springfield stocks were stained with logwood stain, which isn't even available any more.

I have found Fiebing's Antique Leather Stain in Medium Brown is just about a perfect match for the U.S. 1903 stocks. Gives it just the right hint of red. I don't know how it would look on a 98K stock, but I would recommend experimenting with leather stains because they don't seem to have all the other things added in that are prevalent with the modern wood stains. I think you get better results with the finish that way.

          don't laugh now.
i have found the a really good stain to use on K98 stocks and other stocks like russian and finnish mosins is made from mixing tar in paint thinner.this is the tar that is used to fill cracks in the street and for sealing roofs.use about like a spoonful to about a cup of thinner.
i have used it a little on walnut but mainly on white wood like the K98 laminated beech and the russian and finn birch.experimented after i picked up my first russian M91/30 back in the 1970s.the stock had a smell like creosote.so i tried some tar i picked up out of the street and let it soak in thinner until it desolved.color was a perfect match.color is a dark yellow brown.
the mix i use goes on almost black but let is set awile and wipe it off with a solvent rag.i strip the stock with epoxy grade paint remover to get out all the old dirt and oil and cosmoline.also good for touching up scratches.
on the K98 laminated stock the color is the same as as the dot 44 stock.this looks to be a common color of stain used on other K98 stocks.
stain penetrates good on bare wood and does not leave white streeks like Minwax type stains.
