Yes, 66753 is the serial number. I don't see anything on the form that looks like a date either, there are date slots but the numbers in them don't make any sense. However, the price of the carbine indicated on the form would be right for the 60's.

I don't know if there are known serial number ranges for M1A1's, but I think it is known that they were delivered under 2 different contracts in 1943 and 44. You should certainly make sure that any parts it has are correct for the year, i.e. if the barrel date is in the middle of 1943, then it should not have parts made in 1944 assuming it hasn't been reworked. Good luck.

      Alan,
Virtually all the sales documents had the Julian date, and if I remember correctly you have to pretty well know the date already before the Julian date makes sense. It does appear that it is listed as an M1 and not M1A1.
The tiny little blocks on the forms were not always utilized as intended. The serial number does appear to be 66753. I believe Ruth's book mentions interchangeability tests on M1A1 Carbines with serial numbers in the mid 30,000 serial number range. If it is an unaltered M1A1 it will still have all the early features, and should be finished in Du-Lite blue. That, plus it will be a prize.

I have to confess that at this point I have not seen the carbine, but the owner assures me that it came from the DCM with the flip-type rear sight, no bayonet lug, and that the stock has GI inspector's marks. The guy is an old-time collector who has been a straight shooter with me over the years (my Japanese Type 99 LMG and German MG08 w/ sled mount that have been posted on this Forum both came from him at VERY reasonable prices).

        Here we go:

It looks like 30 Jan 1964 (4030 in the document number) )is when your carbine was placed on order by the DCM on the 1348. 3 Feb 1964 (4034) was when the order looks to have been filled. Although it could be 1974 as well. No way to be certain I think other than pricing or owners remarks.

Interesting to see such an old 1348. I so hated filling those things out for parts!

          Guys,

Thank you very much for the information, especially in decoding the date on the DCM form (I think it is going to be1964, given the other background facts).

I will make a point to go examine the gun and photograph it for posting here.

          Alan
