    What is an "end cap?"

    Hello,

    I was reading the description on a Model 1853 Enfield Rifled Musket marked 1862 Tower and it says "end cap is numbered 479."

    I am trying to figure out if this was a Civil War used weapon and I have seen many Confederate used Enfields marked with similar 3 digit and 4 digit inventory numbers on parts of the weapon such as the butt plate and the underside of the rifle.

    Just wondering what an end cap is so I have an idea where is is marked.

    I believe the reference of 'end cap' is the same as 'nose cap', the brass piece at the front (or end) of the stock.
