    Luger what ammo to use?

I just aquired a German luger 1916 dwm. I have 3 types of ammo here.
first is .380 and then 2 different brands of 9mm. the .380 casing is shorter than the other 2 boxes of 9mm. and one of the 9mm the lead is longer. all the ammo fit in the magazine. I dont want to harm my luger . I ask a few people and they dont know. this site is great and i know a lot here knows a lot more than i do. which ammo is the best to use? I would appreate any commit.

    A couple of reflections:

Check the gun properly so it is in shootable condition.
Then consider if you really want to shoot with an old and very collectible gun like this.

And most important DO ONLY fire gently charged 9mm Luger ammo (9x19 parabellum). Preferably modern ammo.

It is after all a nice experience to fire a classic hand gun like a Luger!

    Cheers,
    Felix

The .380 ACP will fire in the Luger if fed through the magazine, but will not function the action. The European designation is 9mm Kurz, but not intended for the Luger.
Most any modern 9mm Parabellum/Luger that will function your pistol will be OK.
If your 1916 is collector quality there is always the chance of breaking something that cannot be easily replaced. Several years ago on one of the Luger forums a member gave a running account of shooting his Artillery Luger. Then one day he reported that the breech block had cracked.
I have owned this 1916 DWM some 25 years, but have never fired it.

Earltime99 ,first need to know the condition of your DWM , all matching ?reblue ? then make sure your's are 9MM not the 7.65 caliber (since that are 1916 date so it should be 99% 9MM) try the Winchester 9mm in white box which you can find them in Walmart for about $13 for 50rd ,remember DO NOT ever use any +p or any surplus ammo intent for submachine gun! if your Luger are all matching and with original finish and you want to shoot it more often than just testing the gun than I'll recommend to get a complete toggle assembly or even the whole upper assembly for range use , shooting a 90 years old plus gun always a risk.

I've always used 115 grain ammo in my older, "shooter" grade P08's . . . not quite as hard on them as higher-grain ammo, and most of the time, still has enough "kick" to work the toggle-action properly, without jamming. Everyone is correct - be VERY careful shooting an older gun . . . and you do run the risk of damaging it when you do. Most of my collector guns were test-fired, but a few I kept without doing so . . . and some I simply wore out - you have to decide for yourself which is the better option.

The lighting normally makes the straw parts look better than they are. The safety lever normally shows the most wear.

I usually just buy the Winchester white-box value packs of 9MM, which is available at Wally World for $20/100rds. It runs GREAT in my shooter Luger (a upper-lower mis-matched 1940). Congrats on youir first Luger, there will be more.

Wow. Nice. Do not fire it, if you ask me . . .

Agree. Find a shooter grade if you just want to shoot one. The wear is cumulative even if the chance of breaking something is remote.
