    Tokarev SVT 38/40 Question

    Hey guys,

There is a nice looking Tokarev SVT 38/40 at the local pawn store. Been there for some time, at least 6 months. It might have been refubished by the soviets it looks so good in areas.

What is a fair price to pay for one?

What does he want right now ? Most pawn shops tripple the price of actual value. I think you need to look it over, see if its russian or finnish and decide if you even want it, or if its too expensive, but dont expect much flexibility in a pawn shop. Pawns can be hard to deal with. So what the shop wants for the gun has no real place in reality. Tell em what youre willing to go, and if they pass it isnt meant to be yours.

Also depends on if it's an SVT38 or an SVT40.

If it's an SVT38 you are talking $3k+ for a nice one. While a typical import marked Soviet refurb Tula or Izhevsk SVT40 would average about $700-1000. If it's a Kovrov then add another couple hundred to that price. If it's a non rebuilt non import marked SVT40 then add another $500 to that price. If it's a sniper version then you're back into the SVT38 price range.

Also check them thoroughly. The barrels on a lot of them have been shot out and the gas systems are wrecked from corrosive ammo.

I guess the main question is about the exact version of this SVT. Here in Europe SVT38 are several times more expensive than SVT40 if we speak about original guns but not those made of SVT40. For example, in Russia SVT38 is about five or six times more expensive than SVT40. They cost about $2500 and $500 respectively.

They want something like $860.00 for it. I did not look at it very well just noted the year on the receiver 1941. I have a hunch it's an import with import stamps but not sure. I may go back and take some photos if they will let me or some notes.

I saw one on gun broker with a navel stock for less. I read that Navel Troops knew better how to maintain and handle them then did the Soviet army and thus had a much better sucess rate with reliability.

Offer him 650. for it with all it comes with. I also would check the bore, prior to offering, for obvious reasons . If you want to pay that much or there is no flexibility , then , you either buy it or you dont. I always enjoyed the ones i have owned. Mine all had rails on them.
