My First Gewehr 98- Oberndorf 1917

Well boys, what horrendously mismatched firearm has Anthony got lying on his basement carpet today? It looks like "Mauser lust" has struck again because it's a Gewehr 98, made at Mauser Oberndorf in 1917.

This one has definitely not been treated with tender, loving care. It's been sanded, wood-puttied, cold blued, and no two parts have the same numbers. Like most of the Oberndorf-made Gew98s from 1916-1918; this one saw service in Turkey at one time or another. The only parts that are Turk proofed are the screws on the rear sling swivel, most of the parts on the bolt, and the bolt release lever. As far as I know, everything else, including the bolt, the barrel, and the action have no Turk proofs. Oddly, the barrel is not stamped with a serial number. It is marked "Kr. 515" under the handguard. This Gew98 was imported into the U.S. by Navy Arms at some point.

It's an old soldier of the Kaiser that ironically probably fired more rounds for the Grand Viziers and Presidents of Turkey than for Ol' Bill. I realize that it's probably not worth jack sh*t in terms of collector value, but as far as I'm concerned, a Gewehr 98 is a Gewehr 98 and I'm glad I was able to get my hands on this one.

    Excellent!

That is a fine looking rifle! I'm hoping to add a Gewehr 98 to go along with my Mauser 98K in the collection one day. Thanks for posting!

That makes a lot of sense; I can't believe I missed that. Thanks for looking.

It looks like you did pretty good. Ive found a vet bringback Gew 98 (NRA wretched, but original) at a local gun store but I cant buy anymore guns until I get a place of my own (with the economy now, I am more likely to find a VK98 and a 12th series type 99 in my gun safe, get struck by lightning and win the lottery in the same day),

Thanks for the compliments guys. I think this one is going to be in my collection for a long time. Now to start saving for a pre-1916 Gew 98, preferably unit marked.

I think the one at my local gun shop is a spandau 1916. Want me to have a look next time I am there? I would buy it but I have to save up for a pistol now (Police Academy). BTW, Ive heard that alot of the Turk'd Gew98 rifles have the sights replaced so at least yours still has the roller coaster sights.
