    MG 42 makerscodes question

    Hello everyone

Im not sure if my question is on his place here, but anyway...
two years ago I bought an MG 42

    dated 1943
    serialnbr 4037 C
    mainmaker {I presume} cra
a lot of waffenambts are presented

Now, I need some information concerning the markerscodes on the different pieces. Mine has different three letter codes like ´bpr´ , ´cof´ , ´jdq´, etc on different pieces....the bipod is marked ´dfb´, but doesn´t seems to be the type discribed in numerous books I checked out already.

My specific question is if this MG could be put together or are there really so many makers for 1 MG . I checked out Uwe Feist his Weapons of the Wehrmacht vol 1, but it is not that detailed. Is there a good reference on the net treating this subject

    can send pics by email

    thx in advance
    cheers

    Jan,

I have the following info on your codes

bpr- is Johannes Grossfuss,Doblen in Sachsen. Maker of MG42 parts

cof- is Carl Eickhorn Solingen, Maker of Small arms components(as well as daggers)

Jdq - No maker details known

If I can recommend the following book on Military Maker Codes

'German Military Letter Codes.' By John Walter published by Small Arms research publications PO BOX 2071,Hove, East Sussex England, BN3 7PU. ISBN 0-9526927-0-8.

    Hope this helps

        MG 42

"cra" is the maker code for "Maget, Berlin". This is the main maker of the gun. The other maker codes that are present on it, are from the sub-contractors. These sub-contractors ususally made simply stamped or welded parts for the MG42. They were sent to the main maker, and assembled to the gun.

Maget, Berlin was one of the largest manufacturers of the MG42. Thier guns will usually have a nice looking finish to them, and it has held up well. However Maget MG42 are usually reguarded as teh poorest quality MG42s. In my opinion the MG42s built by Mauser, or Steyr are the best!

As for maker codes, you don't need to waste your money on a book! Just go to - www.gunsworld.com and click on German ordnance codes. They have both the numerical listing as well as the alpha listing. You print out all of them!

                to Mark Holden

The code ´jdq´ is indeed not the correct markerscode, it has to be ´bpr´ {upsidedown} - sorry - but is was hard to read and only marked on a small piece.

bpr - stands for ´Johannes Grossfuss, Metall und Lacierwarenfabrik, Doebelnm Saxony´
Now I know all the codes - problems solved

                kind regards
