I don't normally stray over into this forum, but my friend just shared this story his granddad told him before he died.
An interesting tale, and one of 1000's!
"He was a POW in a camp near Austria, then escaped with a German soldier who'd had enough of the nazis. They were on the run for 14 days together but couldn't speak each other's language so just smoked! He said he was a nice guy and changed my granddads opinion of Germans.
He was eventually recaptured and taken to another camp, finally the Yanks freed him months later. He was put in charge of 'booze' detail, and 'commandeered' the local (nazi) doctor's big Mercedes to take trips to town, to 'commandeer' all the booze he could fit in, then went back to camp and got drunk with the yanks.
It was on one of these trips that he came across a pile of confiscated weapons. He took 10 PPK's and a double barrelled thing with a rifle barrel underneath. This proved a good hoard, as he bribed a pilot with 4 of the pistols to drop him back in Britain. He still had some guns, the rifle thing, and 6 PPK's right up until a 'gun amnesty' in the 70's when he gave them up...shame eh. He told me the story and gave me a nazi dagger shortly before he died. War was an 'interesting adventure' according to my granddad, he said he saw the world 4 free, and all the wives were so grateful when their men came back, they were housewives forever without no complaining,....yes!"
those were the days!
