Cleaning a German WW1 Flare GUn

    Hi

Any tips on how to clean this piece up.

It appears it was stored badly with one side recieving all the punishment, the other side is fine.

    It still dry fires.

you can use 0000 brass wool and gun oil and really slow go over it. Brass will not hurt the metal, it will only take the rust off. I did this with ones of my guns who was in holster from time it was brought back from germany (70 years) and it had some rust on it. It did not hurt the blue on it neither. I hope this helpes.

First spray it several times with WD40 and wait a little for it to work on the rust. Then you can use finest metal wool soaked with WD40 /or Balistol/ and the result will be very good.

Bluing is not as fragile as you might think it is. Remember that when pistols were still rust blued the rust formed by the bluing process was removed with either steel wool or wire wheels. When the rust was carded off, the bluing remained. 4/0 steel wool is probably the softest thing you can use that will still cut rust. The brass wool is no softer than steel wool, and was developed for marine use, where if any of the steel wool fibers remained they would rust.
At most of the gun shows you see rust removing pads which is a rather coarse steel wool.

"Perhaps there's no better or safer way to remove surface rust on firearms without damaging the bluing than by using a product called Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner. It's a coarse, stainless steel scrubbing pad of sorts and works great to remove surface rust. The product is $5 post-paid and is available from: Big 45 Frontier, PO Box 90947, Sioux Falls, SD 57109, or by calling 800-324-1548. A few strands of the steel pad work well to remove rust and lead without damaging the bore."

All Sound Advice,,This project shoud go rather well.

I tried to clean a ground dug once and it crumbled apart, I think this one is in nowhere near the bad condition the ground dug was in.

                Thanks !
