K98 Mauser for evaluation

I would like to get everyone's opinion on whether I was sold an original German Mauser or maybe a Russian reconditioned one or Serbian...etc.

I have these few pics to start with...still has a ton of cosmoline on it but here you go

So it's not original it was reconditioned by the Russians?

Yes, it was refurbished by the Russians and then put in storage for possible distribution to satellite states.

Do you think $300 is way too much for this gun?

That's probably an OK price for those - yours seems to have rough wood and some pitting though.

It's getting so that all k98's even surrender pieces are going up there in price.

For that condition, $300 is probably a little on the high end, but still within reason. Russian Captures have increased in value alot lately, so one day you will look back and see that rifle as one of your better buys.

Thanks for the help and the info guys...I may keep it..I'm just trying to weigh my options as I do have a chance to return it if I wish...just don't have a ton of time if you know what I mean.

If you have the option of returning it, I would do so. I think you could find a nicer one for $300 than that, or for just a trifle more. I didn't know you had a return option.

I'm just a little worried I won't be able to find a decent one since they are indeed going up in price...

They can still be found for reasonable prices. Just last week I bought a nice one for $250.

Nope, online. You can occasionally find a good one at a gun show, but they may be priced higher.
