2 ww1 Imperial German rifles, opinions requested

    Hi,
recently picked up 2 Imperial German rifles and am going to sell them. I wanted to get some idea if they are correct and an approx. price range. The first one is a kar88. It is Erfurt arsenal marked, 1891, appears matching. The second one is a gew88, Spandau 1916 marked and mismatched. Any info appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Gerard

I am in no way an expert on German rifles, but the Gew 98 looks like the stock is short and the front site is gone. From what I have as far as reference the gun should be 49" overall and the barrel should be 29". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gewehr_98
        Hope this helps a little.

+1 on the Gew 98 issues.

Also, the stock finish is not original. I'm not a big fan of parting out rifles, but given the noted issues and the mixed numbers you might actually get more money from it by parting it out. Potential buyers would probably be looking to do that anyway.

The Kar 88 seems nice though and is a nice find, many of these were converted into sporting rifles.

the 88 carbine is verry interesting it have the regimental stamps of the 3 bavarian chevaulegers regiment 5 companie weapon number 17
a verry scarce rifle and marking
i think here in europe the price range are if it is matching around 1500 euros .

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if the rifles are worth $500 each or so?

                $500 each... no.

You could ask $500 on the Kar88 , but it as noted has had the wood refinished which hits collector value. You need to check to see if the bolt head matches as often on gew& kar88's they don't. Anyhow you would be lucky to get $500 for the kar88 in the present market.
The gew98. Well it's mismatch , has had the stock butchered , barrel has been chopped down , stock refinished as well. You would do well to get more than $175 for what's left of it. It's a parts donor or a restoration project to shooter status for someone wiht the time and money.

if you sell the 88 karabiner for 500 bugs i will take them direct
only the way from the states to europe cause a lot of
                  paperwork .

Agreed, the Kar88 is the real winner of the two rifles. They are quite desirable. It's a shame that the Gewehr 98 has been butchered.

"Quite desirable" ?. If not monkeyed with they are very collectable... but monkeyed with they are common. At least two or more at every SOS/NGD show. Now the gew91 version of the kar88 is "very desirable" , but again if not monkeyed with and matching. The kar88/gew91 are not rare at all . I stress again that finding one withtthe wood and metal not dicked with and complete matched is the hard part.
