Can you do the top and right receiver markings? You sure its an Spandau/1916?
The marking you are asking about is a Bavarian fireproof and to say its odd to see a Bavarian fireproof on a Spandau receiver is an understatement.
However, recently we have determined that other mfg have assembled other firms receivers so it would be interesting to see more of your rifle.

Gew 98 Spandau 1916
hi, sorry for the delay in responding but I have been ill. I'm sorry to say that I did not see this post till last night, and I actually sold the gun Saturday. It had been sporterized (stock cut, no front band or bayonet lug etc.) but I can assure you it was marked Spandau 1916 on the receiver top. I have the guys name who bought it and hes not too far from me so I may be able to get you pics through him. Will do my best, and again I aplogize for the delay.
PS: I've owned a number of G98's over the years & its the first time I've seen that marking.

If you can get images of the right receiver, and top it would be nice as this is a very unusual rifle.
The stock cypher and acceptance if still present would be revealing as well if the stock matched? Anyway, many odd things were going on during the war and you do see Amberg receivers with Prussian marking so it is not a complete surprise the reverse being true as well!
Still would be good to see more of this very interesting rifle!
