    Walther P-38 (my only one!)

    Hi folks,

I had promised to Matt (a notorious P38 maniac, but who isn´t?) that I will post some pictures of my only Walther. So here it is: a matching "ac 44", bloc "f", with 93% of the original finish. It came with a soft holster marked "JWa 4" and "P.38" in pretty good condition. The magazine is marked "jvd". I just love it, whant more can I say?

As typical of the late war guns produced in the Third Reich, it has a rough finish, with tool marks visible in the slide and grips. However, they worked as good as early war Walthers.

One intersting thing is the different finish present on the frame (a kind of purple) and on the slide/barrel (matt blue). I discussed this subject with Matt before, but he didn´t see the pictures - now he can talk about! And I´d like to see what you all think of this baby.

So hope you all enjoyed this one.

    All the best,
    Douglas.

              Very nice indeed.

Your magazine is probably a Spreewerke but Matt most likely told you this already

It just occurred to me that the jvd magazine isn't Spreewerke. It's a chech production which as far as I can understand went mainly to the Walther factory for them to use. So it's probably original.

Not only is this a very nice P-38 that you should be rightfully proud of, but your photography is great too. Your "Lady" just joined a rightful place in my "Pistols of the Reich " screensaver on my computer. A really nice piece.
                    Regards,
                    Johnnie

                      Plum Colored P 38

                      Doug,
This is a great looking P 38. Really crisp and clean. I can see why you are proud. Any of us would be proud to have it in our collections. Is there any story behind this most excellent piece??
Bruxton's books talk quite a bit about this "plum" or red color on some of Walther's frames, and sometimes, complete guns. If I remember correctly, they were messing around with the formula/process for blueing, and occasioually this popped up. Very interesting and unusual. I had one with a very pronounced "plum" frame, but sadly, in a time of fiscal stress, sacrificed it to the $$ Gods. .

                        Thanks...

                        Ronnie, Johnnie, Steve and P08,

Many thanks for your compliments for my P38.
I have this gun since late 1998 and I can assure you that it was never messed up. It saw almost no use before being "captured".

Unfortunately, this is one piece that I have no additional info, as I bought it from another collector, out of the blue! I was visiting him and he told that he had this Walther for sale (traded by another collector for some SS helmet or something ) .

Boy, at that time I was looking as a mad for a nice P-38 and there "she" was! It was love at first sight ! But there was a problem: another guy was interested so I had to wait for a couple of days to see if he would get it. Man, it was the longest nights that I ever had!

But... the guy never gave a return and the rest is history...

Sometimes the stories behind the purchasing are also funny!

Thanks once more and all the best!

                        Douglas.

PS - For Johnnie and the others: as usual I have "bigger" shots of it, with better definition. Just contact me to receive a new wallpaper or screenshot!

                          Best regards,

                            Douglas,

A great looking P38 rig I must say!
The frame on your P38 has what is referred to as a "plum" finish. It is typical of 1944 Walthers. Walther was experimenting with finish types to try and speed up production in 1944. They even have an experimental finish that was used, that gave the gun a "rust red" look to it. Collectors call this the "rust red" finish, and it is quite rare. It is mostly found in the 1944 "e" block. However there was some spill over of parts that went into the "f" block as well. Buxton's book has a good section were he talks about the Walther finish types.
I have an "AC44" as well with a "plum" frame. It is in the "g" block. The main difference on mine, is that the frame is marked "eagle/140", inicating that it was produced by FN Browning.

These are just a few of the reasons why P38 collection is so fasinating!
                            Matt
