          hello

from my experience there are 3 different versions of the MG42, with some very subtle differences I did start a thread a while back showing this, will try and find it for you

sorry couldnt find what I was after so am re-posting these pics

can see the differences in the muzzle area, have drawn in a red line to help highlight what I mean

can see on the bottom one how the sloped area starts alot further forward than the one at the top

not sure how well this illustrates the third example, but this does not have the same type of slope near the front area as the first two I have shown does, instead has "two peaks" and also has holes in the end just behind the flash hider, this last example also has a hook underneath for the sling which the other two do not have

sorry about the photos am having to rely on some old ones I have

                hello john.

yes,at the one pic are shows the "short step" and the "long step"

the long step receiver gives only by mauser and gustloff. this starts by gustloff - MU-dfb, middle until ending "f-serial".(all receiver from gustloff have the "arz or rea" stamp because the receiver came from ( arz/rea = Deutsche Kühl- und Kraftmaschinen GmbH) and by gustloff was the final assembly.

and the long step receiver by Mauser starts by DF-ar , ending by "c-serial" BUT ONLY THE RECEIVER WHICH HAVE THE "arz/rea" stamp by the serialnumber.
mauser had even two subcontractors by the receiver.
"arz/rea" - Deutsche Kühl- und Kraftmaschinen GmbH
"bpr" - Johannes Großfuß, Metall - und Lackierwaren.

oh its a complex topic but its interesting topic.

                Nice Greetings NORDLAND1

the other pic shows a receiver with the "UU" style.

this construction with the "UU" was the beginning by the receiver.at a later date these got modified and then got rebuild to the short and/or to the long step.
here the producer, how long gaves the "UU" style.

                  MAGET:
from the first receiver from 1942 until (1943) GH - cra - d-serial.

                  GUSTLOFF:
from the first receiver from 1943 until (1944) MU - dfb - d-serial

                  MAUSER:
from the first receiver from JT (1943) until (1944) DF - ar - a-serial , BUT ONLY RECEIVER WITH THE STAMP OF "arz = Deutsche Kühl- und Kraftmaschinen GmbH"

                  STEYR:
from the first receiver 1942 until (1944) PJ - bnz - without suffix.its difficult to say because steyr had from (1944) PJ - bnz - a-serial until the c-serial the "UU" and the short step.

i hope you understanding what i mean.i know my english is terrible but i will learn it!!!
