I also keep this one ready to go.....
.....M1 Carbine. Inland receiver, but with a rare NON chrome-lined barrel made by Herlo in 1973 (makes the carbine extremely accurate, even out to 300 yards) - the Herlo barrels were made for a US gov't contract, and almost all of the chrome-lined ones were rejected due to chrome peeling in the chamber area. I keep several 30-round magazines loaded with jacketed soft point (but with only 25 rounds - can't buy 30-rounders anymore here in the People's Republic of California, so I have to make sure the springs stay nice and strong).Attached Files

Call me silly, but wouldn't racking the pump on your shotgun give away your position to an intruder? If I were to keep any type of weapon by the bed for self defense it would be kept locked and loaded. Fumbling with a safety, chambering a round, inserting a mag...these are not things I would like to be dealing with when presented with any type of threat in my home while still half asleep.
Children in the house? I would have a quick access safe for that. They even have biometric safes now that open with your finger print.
Don't get me started on handling your guns while drinking. There is not enough bandwidth on this site for me to carry on a rant about how irresponsible and stupid that is.
You can not buy any type of weapon to compensate for the lack of abilities of an untrained shooter. Using a twelve gauge shotgun does not rectify the fact that you need to train your wife in the correct handling and use of ANY firearm.
Here is my bump in the night gun of choice
Gen III Glock 19 with Streamlight TLR-2 light and laser combo.

I got that laser light combo in a deal I did a couple weeks ago. I have never and will never use it. I don't recommend the use of a laser in a self defense situation as it has a tendency to make one dependent on it, and (like said above) can give away ones position.
I turned the laser on one time to sight it in and never have used it again. Lasers are fun toys but should never trump iron sites. The Glock has Trijicon night sites
