I don't know anything about these guns. This What do I look for regarding stampings, etc. to determine if it is worth purchasing. I have searched and not found much. Copy and paste the link to see the photo. I appreciate any help. What resources online, or in print would you recommend for a beginner?

Cheers, Ade.
You must copy/paste the link. Geocities doesn't allow direct linking. It is the rifle. Also marked ' GeM 98'

Pretty poor picture to make much of a valuation opinion from…
It is an obvious post war altered Gewehr98, the rear sight has been replaced with a tangent sight (replacing the lange “roller coaster” sight it originally came with) this is a very common sign of Weimar use. The blued look of the receiver means it isn’t in its WWI configuration of a bright receiver. (the bolt looks like it has a bent bolt handle- it should be straight handled; also the disk in the stock is missing)
It also has a cutdown stock (difficult & expensive to find legit/undinked up Gewehr98 stocks) looks like a shorter barrel- depending on length it could be a 98k conversion (?)
As for wartime Amberg Gewehr98’s they are not rare- perhaps scarce as all 1914 dated are… in 1914 Amberg production went half way into the “d” range (40,000+)
As for on-line information on the Gewehr98:
http://meltingpot.fortunecity.com/utah/894/gew98.htm
It is excellent info from an old KCN member- a little old though…
For the basics:
There were 4 state run arsenals:
Bavarian Arsenal Amberg
Prussian Arsenal Danzig
Prussian Arsenal Erfurt
Prussian Arsenal Spandau
Then there were 7 commercial companies that produced the Gewehr98:
Waffenfabrik Mauser A.G. Oberndorff A/N.
Deutsche Waffen Und Munitionsfabriken. Berlin
C.G. Haenel Suhl
V.C. Schilling & Co. Suhl
Waffenwerke Oberspree Kornbusch & Co. (subsidiary of DWM 1916 & In 1918 Oberspree name only, Kornbusch dropped)
Simson & Co. Suhl
J.P. Sauer & Sohn Suhl
In 1914 only Danzig; Spandau; Amberg; & Mauser Oberndorf were making the Gewehr98- by 1915 all of the above were in production!
In my opinion the rifle as imaged isn’t worth over $100 & even then you would have difficulty getting that back out of it when you sell it…
