I believe it is a commercial model. I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow this and several other unique items from the same family trust as part of a Gallipoli display I put on several years ago. The provenance is solid and has been documented in several NZ official history books.
I hope the following images provide you with adequate detail.

Mike... it's been a while since I last visited this post and am glad to see the continued interest and photos that have been added. I can say for sure that this is not a Turkish gun. In 1920 the Canadian Government published the Report of the Award of War Trophies. In it it lists all the war trophies that were brought back by the Canadian Army, from field guns down to anti-tank rifles. Some of the information pertaining to an individual weapon can be quite detailed as to date, place and battalion that captured it while others have no information at all. I can tell by the serial number that this MG08 was captured by the 2nd Division on the Western Front.

Been awhile since I've posted on this thread. I have posted this picture on the Collections part of the forum but for those who haven't seen it here is what I've beeen up to as to displaying the MG08...
