I purchased this P38 from a local WWII Vet this week. I believe it is a late war model. The pistol is in excellent shape and all numbers are matching. I did a little research and found that the 88 code is Spreewerk. Please correct me if I am wrong. I also found a thread that talked about late war p38s with the alfa prefix but it only went from a-y. Mine is z. Is this correct? The holster came with the pistol but I have never seen one like it. Is it a police model? It is marked "GENSHCOW & CO A.G." and on the inside it has a stamp "GECO". Any info about the pistol and holster would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jay

Hi Jay,
You are correct, E/88 was used at Spreewerk.
Spreewerk numbered their guns starting with the "no letter suffix" and then used a suffix from "a" to "z". Then they started using the prefix. "a" and "b" were used and a couple of "c" prefixes have been reported.
According to a researcher in Czechoslovakia, your "z" suffix pistol was made in February of 1945.
Also, P.38 collector and researcher Orv Reichert maintains a large data base of reported pistols and numbered magazines. Your pistol's serial number was reported in 1989 and sold for $435. Rough machining on the frame was mentioned.
Your holster is not a WWII era P.38 holster. It looks like post war example to me but maybe someone else will have more info about it.
