How do people here feel about duffle bag cuts? I have a mint '44 byf,all matching, that has this cut(which is under a band and not visible). How badly does this affect the collector value ?

Would love to see some photos!! I'm not sure if I would know a duffle bag cut if I saw one. Sounds like an interesting topic to persue

That was the problem-I didn't see it either! It was a beautiful, all matching rifle, and in too much of a rush, I bought it at a gun show, and did not discover the cut until I got it home. I have a herd of other 98ks,but they are all the typical eastern front captures with non-matching bolts. Personally,it doesn't bother me too much,as it indicates to me a vet bring-back,and I don't consider it as serious a flaw as a ground mum on a Japanese rifle, but I am curious how other collectors view the importance of this particular thing.
I'd like to post photos,but I just don't know how-I'm pretty backwards.

Someone sold you a K98 with a duffle cut stock and didn't tell you.
A duffle cut stock will effect the value of the rifle. However, it really depends on the collector as well. I don't mind duffle cuts as much either, because as you indicated, it proves that this is a vet bring back.
The location under the barrel band is a common one. Also when re-assembling the stock it is best to cut it at an angle (see pic below), so that you have more surface area to re-attach the two pieces.
Below is a picture of a K43 that I have, that has a duffle cut stock as well.
