Butt stamp: Z. Gefgs. = ?

This stamp found on both sides of the butt of a so-called Gew 98M, reworked sometime after 1933. Meaning?

That occurred to me, too, but what's the Z for? Another possibility is Gefolgschaft, but again, what's the Z for?

Have posted query on that site as well. Upper case Z = probably a noun in German useage; not z.=zur.
