    I am sick....

In recent months I have cultivated a friend over the internet who was member of the Dutch contingent of UN Peacekeepers in the Balkans.

We became fast friends when he sought help on the MSN Group The Gun Room for his Springfield 1911A1. I was able to put him in touch with the Springfield people and I acted as a sometime go between for him.

    Anyway...

Among the duties he had to perform was to round up and dispose of weapons that his men found and/or confiscated. One day he was accompanied by a UN observer and what do you suppose he comes across?

He found a double latched wooden case complete with 5 snail drum magazines and the loading tool. The chest was dated 1916 and was by all accounts in excellent condition. My friend attempted to convince the UN observer that this was a museum piece and should be spared destruction. All his entreaties were to no avail.

He had to order and carry out the destruction of this wonderful find.

He has sent me pictures of the before and after. I am sick. If I can ever get them posted, I think you will share my sadness.

For those not familiar with what this is, I refer you to Eugene Bender's title, Luger Holsters and Accessories of the 20th Century, pages 278-279.

    I really want to weep.

Its ironic how in America we associate guns with freedom and our idependance from tyranny and the first thing we do when we attempt to restructure other countries and "bring about democracy" is take away all the arms. Let them destroy the antiques so the combatitants can seek out more efficient and better weapons. Makes an incredible amount of sense, enough to make me sick.

        Well said.

        Well said Erik...

Concerning the Balkans conflicts, a friend of mine (also a collector) was once watching the TV news, and the reporter was showing the weapons that the UN had "captured". He told me that he could see a very nice StG44 and some MP40s beteween the pile... As fas as he can remember there was a guy who was pickinĀ“ up the historical pieces to send them to a museum or something. I hope so...
