I have a chance to pick up this Muaser Broomhandle. Can anyone help identify what the markings are? Is this a niece one worth picking up???

RFV is reputed as "Reichsfinanzverwaltung", which means Reich's Financial Administration Service. In other words, it is a gun that might have been carried by tax collectors.
The mark on the grip is a Polizei inventory mark. I need further research to discover what was the district/city.
I would like to know more about the gun: caliber, adjustable sights, serial number range, proofs, etc...

It looks like a .30 cal., the adjustable sights go ffom 0-1000, the serial number is 412xxx range, and the only proof I notice is the crown U. Does that help?

I took the liberty to contact Don Maus, the author of "History Written in Steel", a fantastic book about German Unit Marks. He is very interested to know more about your gun. I sent him the link to this topic so he may be able to contact you.
Besides that, this is what he answered me on another board:
Your is a Wartime Commercial Broomhandle. As the name said, these were the pistols produced by Mauser during the WWI. Considering the serial number range I would date your as made in 1917. Many of these pistols saw miltary use as they could be bought privately by Officers directly from the factory. The Wartime Commercial Broomhandles had the new safety added (introduced in 1915) and, so, has the stamp "NS" on the back of the hammer.The marking is that of the Sächsische Landessicherheitspolizei, the State Security Police of Saxony, the short-lived militarized police comparable to the Prussian Sicherheitspolizei. As in Prussia, these were merged with the city police at the insistance of the IMKK.
This is a very interesting pistol and I would very much like to know more about it. In HWIS, I have only three other C96s listed with a S.L.Pol. marking. One is in 7.63 mm and also has an R.F.V. marking.
The Saxon C96s were replaced with P08s in the early 1920s. Apparently, some of these were transferred to the Reichs Finanzverwaltung.

No more pictures for now. It seems you made a nice deal on this C96: the markings are scarce/rare and your pistol still displays a good amount of its original finish. Not mint but still in very good condition. A honest piece with that "it was there" look that I love. The pistol just need a good cleaning after what it will look a lot better. TLC is all that it needs! Enjoy it!
