    Purchasing Guns

    Hi All,
Just a couple of questions. Where is a good place to buy a nice Kriegs Luger (the long barrel type?) of wartime manufacture? Are these faked like all the other German WWII stuff? If so how can you tell. How does it work in the U.S. buying through the web and mailing since they are trying to take away the 2nd amendment? I know that when I bought my handguns I had to wait 15 days and my shotgun was an out the door purchase, but that was a long time ago and things have changed.
    Thanks, Sal

    Lugers

    Sal,

    <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

Unfortunately, Lugers are also faked, mainly the most sought models . As far as I could see around the most faked Lugers are the Imperial Navy (with the 6” barrel and adjutable sights to 100-200m) and the Krieghoff Luger, mainly the late ones (1943-45). Also, I´ve heard that sometimes “Black Widows” are also faked. Be careful also with Luger Carbines.

The longest barrel avaiable for a military Luger is on the Artillery Luger or the “Lang Pistole 1908” (LP-08) which has the 8” barrel and sight that runs up to 800m. I don´t think that they are faked, since they aren´t THAT rare, but also expensive. <o></o>

To know where to buy and info check this thread where some dealers are indicated: <o></o>

Delivery is a subject that I leave for the others answer, since I´m at South of The Border. <o></o>

    Hope it helps you.<o></o>

Good luck in your hunting! <o></o>

      Sal,

Not sure exactly what you are looking for? Do you want a Krieghoff luger? or a Kriegsmarine marked luger?
Krieghoff did not make a long barreled luger, so I'm guessing that you want a kriegsmarine one?

First off, not all KM lugers are long barreled! In fact most of the long (artillery) P08 with KM markings are actually WWI double dated pistols. (usually dated 1917/1920). These were reworked, and then re-issued to the KM in 1935. These are mostly in the "a" "b", and "i" letter suffix blocks.
These are extremely rare! Estimated procurement of the Long P08 for the KM was only 700 pistols!
I can't even imagine what the price of one of these would be!?

Now if you want a standard barrel KM luger, those are much easier to find. (by "much easier" I mean "extrememly difficult" rather than "impossible"). These will usually have either an "O" or "N" property number.
About 35,000 of these were issued to the KM.

If you are just looking for a long navy luger (not nazi, with 6" barrel), then these are a bit easier to find as well. In fact, I just checked out Simpsons' web site, and they have one for sale right now for $5500, and it looks pretty good too! (about 97%)

If you are seriously looking for one of these, I would go straight to the experts on this. Don't mess around with auctions, or your local dealer.
Go to Ralph Shadduck, or Simpson Ltd. The price will be very high!

As for laws pertaining to purchasing a handgun, I take it you don't have an FFL or C&R? If not, then you will have to fill out some paper work (criminal background check), and there is a waiting period (usually 2 days in most states). Then it is yours!

        Sal,

The best thing you can do is contact your local Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms office and get an application for a Curio and Relic Firearms license. You can also go to their website and download the list of C&R designated rifles and pistols, as well as machine guns. You'll need Adobe Acrobat and the list has thousands of approved firearms. Basically it covers any rifle, pistol or shotgun made prior to 1946, and allows you to buy from private sellers or dealers nationwide and have it shipped right to your door. Once you get your license, you'll need to make a bunch of photocopies of it. When you purchase a gun, you sign one of the photocopies and send it along with payment. You'll receive the gun along with the seller's C&R or FFL and you'll need to record the transaction in a bound book or something similar. The cost of the license is $30 and pays for itself after your first purchase.

          Gene, Matt, Douglas,
Thanks fellows!!! Well I knew there had to be a lot more to it than "I want a nazi gun". I didn't realize a wartime Luger was so damn expensive! Well I will look into the licence first, save up money and do some research. I'm so scattered, I want a lot of different stuff. Are any WWII Lugers marked not such killers to the wallet? Is there a good starter Luger to go with ones WWII German stuff as a representative firearm? My friends dad was a tank commander and brought back a luger with him, its horribly rusty now, but all the parts seem to have a little nazi eagle stamped in them. That's the kind of thing I'm looking for minus the rust of course. Obviously there is a lot more to know in this field!
          Well Thanks again, Sal

            Options...

            Sal,

Welcome to the club! Well, collectable Lugers are becoming harder to find amd more expensive every year. You are on the right track when you say that first you have to learn more. There are very good books about Lugers around the net (they were all listed here on the Forum too, please take a look), and they can help you to discover wht is you best option.

The most common Nazi Lugers are those made by Mauser between 1936-1942, bearing the secret code (not the "Mauser Banner") over the toggle. Only the pistol (without any other components as holster, spare magazines and loading tool) are running from US$ 900.00 on. Have in mind that these values are for very good weapons, that are highly collectable, I mean: more than 80% of original finish, good bore, matching parts, etc.

But if you are looking for a simple shooter, the prices tend to be lower, but not if you are intending to become a serious collector. But it´s up to you and your wallet. The most important thing is: you have to have fun with your gun! If it costs you US$ 100.00 or US$10,000.00 but gives you a thrill that´s what matters, and we all respect that.

At last, during your hunting, feel free to contact us to answer any questions. There are lot of guys here who´d love to help you.

            All the best,

            Douglas.

              Sal,

I've only done this once before, and the guy passed up on it, and now regrets it. If you are looking for a really nice nazi luger rig, at a fair price. I just listed a very nice complete nazi luger rig ("byf41" luger, two "fxo" mags, take down tool "eagle/655", and 1940 dated brown hardshell holster!), for sale at gunbroker.com.
I would HIGHLY recommend that you check it out!

If not, there are plenty of standard nazi marked luger around. Price can vary from a common shooter ($350 range) to some of the rarer ones like I described above. The sky is the limit when it comes to lugers! That is why they are so popular, and collectable!

              Matt
PS- I've attached a pic of the complete luger rig that I have for sale below.
(no I'm not selling it on this site, just showing the pics! so it doesn't belong on the estand!)

You guys have all been great and when the time is right (more like when the $ are right ) I will take you up on the offer for info and help!
Thanks to all of you, Sal
