I disagree, although the Luger functions, it doesn't always do so well. A lot of Lugers that I have shot seem to jam a lot, and are finicky. But from my experience, it really depends on the Luger.... and the mag you use. And keep in mind before I shot them, they were well oiled and clean. Who knows how well it would work if it was neglected, like it might have been in the field. On the other hand, I think P38s seem to function a lot better, and chances are you will have a lot fewer jams.

Recently I bought a Luger that was a total parts gun, must be parts from at least 5-6 Lugers on it... and believe it or not it works almost flawlessly, even better than all the "nice" matching Lugers I have shot

I personally think that the P38 is a better weapon in terms of performance and simplicity, but almost no other pistol beats the good 'ol Luger in the "pleasing-to-the-eye" department.

Well correction here - it was Hoobler that died from the accidental discharge , and the TV series sensationalized it as is typical with hollyweird types. That is this regretable incident took place at night and the pistol was actually a 32 caliber belgian automatic. The long stretched gonna get me a luger theme to work up to Hooblers death was pure goofy hollywood. By the time of Bastogne most if not every guy in easy had accumulated german pistols and likely the P08 was the most common among those trophies.
Yes the P08 is charachteristically sensitive to steel cased and low powered ammunition , and dirt and handling. The P38 is mechanically more reliable but not as accurate. I have had alot of problems over the years with P38's breaking parts ( wartime quality for sure ) , and have not found the postwar alloy framed jobs much to rave about.
