Need identification of a bullet casing

    Hello
Today I found a few bullet cases with my detector a a place there was a gunfight in 1944. I am almost sure the cases are postwar, but will check with the pro's.
They are marked: *GEVELOT*38 S.W. SPL (the SP is written smaller, and the L very small)
The cases are about 50% longer than a 9mm case; any chance these were used in WW2??

Is this a rimmed case? If it is, then you can probably bet that they are .38 Smith and Wesson Special cases for use in revolvers. Would love to see pictures.

    Cheers,

If rimmed means that there is a small "ridge" at the bottom of the bullet, like on WW2 brittish 303 rounds, then yes these are rimmed; and I agree they are apparently for a revolver.
There will be no pics unfortunatly. Any chance these are WW2 then? The americans that had the gunfight were from the 1st Special Service Forces, and they ahd quite a few strange weapons...

The markings indicate the .38 Smith and Wesson Special cartridge. Used in a number of revolvers then and now. It's been awhile since I have heard this name, but I think GEVELOT or something similar was a French company. What I CAN tell you is that it is NOT American military issue which would have an abreviated arsenal 2-3 letter code at top and the two didget year of manufacture below.
        Hope this helps,
        Johnnie

Hmm, Gevelot is a french compagnie in Paris; so that would make the rounds post war I guess. To bad... Thanks all who participated.
