If you are happy with it, then it is all that matters at the end of the day.
Go to the range and have fun with it!

You know what, though? It's a pretty gun (although personally, I'd disassemble the bolt and at least cold blue the individual parts rather than having the pimp-shinery) and if YOU are happy with it for being that, then so be it. I dislike Mitchells Mausers for bing deceptive in their marketing, but the Russian capture rifles have ALL be "re-done" to begin with, so I really don't see the major harm in making them LOOK nice, in and of itself- just so long as a seller does NOT try and market one as an "original" K98k, as Mitchells does.

But that's no reason to berate you as a buyer for getting a shiny K98, and you've got no reason to be made to feel bad save for being aware of what you actually have, and that is between you and Mitchell's Mausers. Enjoy your new rifle, and let us know how it shoots.

        Mitchell

I love the service select German 98k that I got from Mitchell's, It shoots lights out and it was only $299.00 Checked many other places, Sarco, Southern Ohio Guns, Empire, Guns America, etc. For the price I can live with a shinny bolt that needs to be dipped blue. Could not be happier with the performance of the gun.

Shoot the crap out of it, only thing it will be good for.

            Mitchell

I thought that was what a gun is supposed to do, shoot good.
Going to look at a BYF-41 98K this week that looks pretty decent but still going to shoot the gun if I purchase it. It's still a Russian Capture Junker!!

am i getting this right that the gun in question is getting slated because of the bolt.to me that is nonsense its going to be taken out a fired down a range.

Shoot it and have fun with it.
I had the opportunity to fire one that was chambered in 30-06, and it was a fine rifle for what it was.

Ran across this post and wondering, what is wrong with Mitchells Mausers?

They pimp-shine and re-numberd Russian Captured K98s, and then sell them at grossly inflated prices as "Matching rifle discovered in a bunker in Germany". They sand the crap out of the stocks and strip the bolts of their finish. Overall they are worth less than a standard RC rifle (IMO).

A good friend of mine, who is nearly blind from cancer chemo treatments, purchased several of the MM's 98k's without first consulting with me (or any of his other gun collecting friends). His version of the story is that he called MM's and was told the guns were "original", etc., etc. Later, when I visited with him, he proudly showed me the three (3) select grade MM's 98k's he had purchased. He then asked me to give him my opinion of the guns. Not wanting to hurt his feelings I tried to dance around the issues and tell him how nice they looked, but he pressed for me to offer my true opinions so I relented and told him what he had purchased. He took the news well, indicating that he would call MM's and arrange to return the rifles for a refund ASAP. I do not know what happened as far as his ablity to obtain a refund, but will follow up next time I visit him.

In short, my friend (an attorney) felt the representations made to him by MM's over the phone to have been highly inaccurate. Who knows . . . I was not a party to the conversation so I do not know what was said, but I hope that MM's took whatever steps were needed to make my friend happy with the situation.

From a serious collctor stand point thats bad ju ju. Most collectors who are going to throw that kind of money without knowing exactly what they are getting though, I am sure most people who purchase them say ooooo pretty shiny and pay stupid money for one, hang it on the wall next to dad or grandpas WW2 medals and call it good. Or they buy one for a shooter. I've dressed a few rifles in my time (of course they look nothing like something you'd see in the field) but I am a collector and a shooter, if it isn't anything like my 58 Remington revolver or Colt M1911 Army model, I may polish and clean. I've done it with a Yugo Mauser, a M91/30 Nagant, and a couple others. They make for pretty rifles but the collector value goes out with that. Then again M91/30s aren't that collectable with standard markings. Neither are the M24/47 Yugos for that matter.

I just want to know why they polish the bolts??? If you are trying to hawk a fake, at least make it believable.

This would be like me buying a fake EKI and gold plating it and then trying to sell it as an original unmessed with piece. Makes absolutely no sense.

But then again, uneducated collectors want pretty rifles.

Imagine that...a rifle that's only good for shooting.

                            What a jaundiced perspective.

Never met any one who bought on that was happy with it. want to get the pimp shine off. strip the rifle & use ammonia. pour a bit on a cotton cloth and rub down the parts. GO OUT SIDE! then make sure the parts are dry = no rusting. you can go over the parts again with a wet cotton cloth with water. ussually works. jeff
