Brass Colt Flare Gun / British Markings

Hi. I know they made fakes of these but this one looks good -- does anyone what period this from? My picture of the British proofs didn't come out. I could take another tomorrow if anyone wants to see them.

Ouch -- Was told this is a WWI French flare gun that someone put fake Colt markings on -- oh well I didn't have much in it.

          Thanks

As I said on another forum,

When I started collecting flare pistols, no one was faking them, and there was hardly any interest. The fakers pretty much stuck to colts and lugers.

Now that flare guns have gained so much interest, I am seeing fake (altered) guns, holsters, cartridge holders, cleaning rods, and even the flares themselves !

Thanks -- I appreciate your input. I wish I could remove the Colt markings. We were doing a big trade and I don't have a lot in it. I knew they faked a lot of these so I was a little leary.

It takes away from genuine reissues, or rare makers. And makes them all suspect.

Yours is marked Colt Patent, and colt never had a patent for a Mark IV.

I own a similar gun marked Van Karner - Van Karner manufactured many types of flares and flare guns, and either was going to produce this Mark IV, or more likely had bought it surplus, and marked it as their own. No french markings on it however. If reissued it was probably originally an "A.H.Fox", or "Scott" Mark IV.

I also own an M-8 USAAF flare pistol reissued and marked by Van Karner.

Reissues exist, but one has to be very careful !

Van Karner advertised reissues for sale - I do not have an ad, or catalog but I know they exist.
