    IBM M1 Carbine LGK K marked

    Hi,
    I've just received an M1 carbine with various markings that are a bit unfamiliar to me, I'm hoping someone can give me and idea as to what I might have? This rifle came through the CMP program. I will be sending photos this evening, in the meantime, here is what I've got.

    Receiver: IBM (LGK K) 0114
    Barrel: IBM (dated 43) flaming bomb
    Serial range: 385XXXX
    Barrel band: Type 2 (KVB)
    Trigger housing: 16KK 0114
    Stock: Has the IBM stamping in the sling well, along with the last four digits of the serial number.

    The last four digits of the serial number are stamped on almost all of the exposed metal parts. There are no signs of an import marking. I do have the CMP certificate. As mentioned, I will be posting photos of this M1 later this evening. In the meantime, If anyone has any ideas, please send them along.

    You have a carbine that was issued to the postwar Austrian Gendarmerie and has been reworked by their (and probably CMPs armorers). The CMP received a bunch of these lately and have been selling them off recently. The CMP website has more information on them.

      Hi,
      Thanks for your quick response. I did read a little bit about the Austrian and Bavarian used carbines. However, I wasn't sure about the markings. Now that you mention it, I remember reading about collector interest is some of these reissued rifles, being they aren't import marked. Do you know of any publications specializing in the history of these carbines? This is a very clean piece and still contains the original cartouche on the stock. If nothing else, it makes a great presentation.

        There is very little written on these postwar police weapons except for individual articles about specific pistols and rifles. There were a whole series of Allied weapons issued to the postwar Austrian and German Police. This was done during occupation so that the Allies could keep track of what weapons the police used. There are also British Enfields and US MP Model 10 pistols with Austrian police markings.

            Hello,

            "LGK K" stands for "Landesgendarmeriekommando Kärnten". Kärnten (Carinthia) is a part of Austria and well known in the world, due to "Jörg Haider" who died last year.

            So as the other members told you, this gun was used postwar in Austria at the police.

              Thank you for your comments. I did come accross the same information this afternoon while poking around on the Internet. There is one thing that still puzzled me, and that is all the metal parts have the last four digits of the serial number inscribed. It looks as though they used an electric pencil to do this. Some of the reference information stated that only the post war German military used that method to mark their weapons. Thanks again for your response. I'm sure we will hear more.
